SUPPERTIME
Located in the family friendly West Chop neighborhood of Martha’s Vineyard, this summer home is designed for a family of restaurateurs to host family and friends while immersed in the natural splendor of the site. The house is configured as a pinwheel with each arm maximally surrounded by nature and the spaces nestled between arms forming intimate courtyards and a pool. Trellises, porches, and landscape paths stitch the building and site together while carefully preserved, mature cedar trees envelope the house.
Given the family’s love for cooking and hosting, the kitchen occupies the heart of the pinwheel, a nexus of family activity and gathering. A lofted ceiling with a commercial skylight makes the space especially luminous while an interior steel-framed glass system connects it with the formal dining space through an operable sliding window. Also at the center of the home is the double-height stair hall with skylights highlighting where the arms of the pinwheel meet.
Interiors are lined with salvaged hemlock paneling while the exterior is clad with character grade cedar planks and shingles that are allowed to naturally grey.
A petite guest house frames a rear courtyard and opens onto the yard with a private terrace.
